Abstract:

Data center interconnect (DCI), the transport layer connecting data centers across metro and long-haul spans, is a fast-growing market demanding 400G+ speed interconnect using DWDM. The DCI market is also often where the latest technology and architectures such as disaggregation, 400ZR, and IPoDWDM, are first used. Dell’Oro estimates that already in 2020 just over 15% of all DWDM equipment was purchased for DCI, and this is expected to increase for the foreseeable future.

To deliver 400G+ on DWDM, vendors are developing new pluggable transceivers using coherent optics. While pluggable coherent optics look to be a simple plug-and-go approach to applications such as DCI, several factors need to be taken into account during the R&D, validation and deployment stages.

This webinar will discuss market trends in DCI, optical transport technology and its evolution, pluggable coherent modules and cover key considerations with use case examples for successfully using, validating, and debugging pluggable coherent optics modules and systems.

Cliff Grossner, VP Market Research at OCP

At the Open Compute Project Foundation, Dr. Grossner leads its market intelligence function and is responsible for driving awareness of OCP, training and certification programs, and guiding inventors presenting their early-stage company ideas to potential investors. Dr. Grossner has more than 25 years of telecommunications industry experience encompassing scientific research, market analysis, corporate and product strategy, product management and marketing. His current interests include IT Ecosystems from cloud to the edge looking at the equipment [servers, IT networking and storage] and software, and physical infrastructure [power and cooling] needed for computation, with a focus on edge computing, silicon components included in IT equipment including coprocessors for AI and ML. Previously, Dr. Grossner was head of the Cloud and Data Center Research Practice, which he launched at Infonetics research and followed through transitions to IHS, IHS Markit and Informa Group. Prior to Infonetics, he held senior positions, including heading strategic marketing for Alcatel-Lucent's enterprise network business, tenures at Bell Labs, several startups and Nortel. He earned his Ph.D. at McGill University, and his Master of Science in Computer Science at Concordia University, winning national scholarships to support his graduate work. He holds more than 10 patents in computer networking, networking embedded security and telecommunications applications.


Jimmy Yu, Vice President Optical Transport Market Research at Dell'Oro Group

Jimmy Yu covers Optical Transport and Microwave Transmission market research at Dell’Oro Group, and since joining Dell’Oro Group in 2001 has become a recognized authority on the Optical Transport market. Prior to his time at Dell’Oro Group, Jimmy worked in product development at Northrop Grumman, management consulting at Deloitte Consulting, and strategic product marketing at Spansion. Mr. Yu received a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of California, Davis and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.


Paul Brooks, Optical Transport Technology and Strategy at VIAVI Solutions

Paul Brooks leads strategy for the VIAVI Lab and Production business unit. After a career in the Royal Navy as a weapons officer, he spent time in a variety of roles within the communications test and measurement industry with a particular interest in enabling the high-speed Ethernet ecosystem. Originally from Ireland, he lives in Southern Germany where he laments the lack of first-class rugby. Paul holds a Ph.D. in opto-electronics from the University of Southampton.
